FlyLo mini-review

Flying Lotus’ new album, Until The Quiet Comes, came out on the 1st October. There’s a stream here, courtesy of Pitchfork.

It’s… challenging. Even though it’s not musically as dense as Cosmogramma, his last album – in fact it’s rather minimalist – it’s hardly background music. It’s complicated and intense in its simplicity, growing and flowing between genres, surpassing pretty much any definition beyond ‘A Flying Lotus Album’. But it’s also rewarding; there’s so much to dig into, closed in behind with 8-bit clicks, guest vocals (Erykah Badu’s track, ‘See Thru to U’, in particular, is spectacular) , rattling basses and ethereal space is something really special. Sure, you can most definitely listen to it without thinking too much, it’s good music, but here’s my advice: pour yourself a drink, sit back, and let yourself sink into it.
